I am using V1.04, AES 4.0. At least that is what it displays upon startup.

It is a TT030 with 4 ST meg & 16 TT meg. Have STFAX set to run out of TT ram.
Also tried it in ST ram--same result.
> What graphics card are you using to get 1280x1024x256? I have seen

It is a CYBERCUBE Cyrel Sunrise M16-1280 graphics card.
>Drawing submenus is handled by the AES, all the application does is to
attach
>a submenu to a menu item.
The Lattice C editor LC5.PRG uses submenus and it does not crash. In "The
ATARI COMPENDIUM" it states that and I quote "AES versions supporting
menu_attach() less than 4.1 contain a bug which causes the AES to crash when
changing or removing a sub-menu attachment." I suppose you are not changing
the submenus (?). I am going to write a quick C program to try this out
myself. I will keep you posted.
>BTW, The submenus work fine with MultiTOS 1.04 on my Falcon in the 256 color

Does not work with TT MultiTOS V1.04 with 256 colors. Took resolution down to
640x480 @ 256. I don't think resolution has anything to do with it, but the
number of bit planes might and the memory required to save the screen for the
submenu draw as you indicated. I don't have a 16 or less color mode with the
graphics card.
Submenus work with GENEVA at 1280x1024 @ 256.
Thanks for your reply.

SUPRATECH [Scott A]:
YES, as a matter of fact, I _DO_ have a standalone FAX machine on the same
line as I use the FAX modem on. BUT, when I switch the modem to another phone
line and fax back to the standalone FAX I get the same results.
I occasionally have connections renegotiate, but I wouldn't call it a frequent
occurance. I beleive there is a short flash of RT or TE during the fall back.
The modem ALWAYS drops from 9600-->7200-->4800 -->2400 with each page.
As I stated earlier, I think I've actually got two problems going on here.
One dealing with possibly flow control which causes the garbled FAXes, the
second may or my not be related to flow control and deals with the fall back
with each page acknowledgement. Come to think of it, there's a THIRD problem;
that of the dropped carrier waiting for a page acknowledgement due to a time
out. The dropped carrier struck intermittently and I can't recall it
happening since the fall back problem began.
To me, it's more and more looking like a failing modem. I have no problem
using the modem as a regular data modem. I connect to GEnie and other boards
daily and do file transfers and all with CTS/RTS enabled. I'm baffled at this
point. Unfortunately, I _need_ computer FAX capability for my DTP business.
Right now I'm forced to print and use my stand alone machine which is a waste
of time, toner, paper and quality.
Thanks for your response to my earlier posts, and any futher help would be
appreciated.

Hi!
Yep my Easy Options Fax Modem works with STraight Fax. My problem is that
it locks up after sending 20% of a txt file to the remote fax. I recover by
using Undo. I call my friend who has the FAX machine and he tells me he got
part of the FAX and it quit.
my faxmodem has chipset ROCKWELL: RC32ACL.

I haven't followed your message thread in detail, but I've also had problems
with fax negotiaition fallback, while at the same time not having problems
with high-speed modem connections.
I haven't confirmed this 100% yet, but I think the problem is with the wiring
of my phone line (which I did myself). The phone company told me that phone
wires need to be a certain distance from electrical and tv cable wires, or the
electromagnetic field emanating from them can cause a resistance in the phone
line and affect fax communication. My phone line actually follows the main
cable coming into the house, and as soon as the weather is better I'll be
rewiring.
Also, the phone company told me they don't guarantee voice lines for more than
2400 baud.

You can file this away to help assure customers as to STFAX's performance with
graphics cards: On the Crazy Dots II, STraight FAX! operates in all modes, all
resolutions, all color planes. I generally run it at 800 X 600 X 256, but have
tried it at up to 1600 X 1200.

Thanks Scott -- I did try Supra Customer Service yesterday (twice). After
spending twenty minutes waiting, and listening to the "promotional

I don't think I have a phone line problem. Everything was working fine until
I simulataneously upgraded the modem itself and the FAX software (STraight FAX

phone line is not the problem. I'll file the information for future use

On my earlier problem printing on a Epson MX-80 with SpeedoGDOS. I contacted
Mike Fulton and he asked for the printer codes for the MX-80 which he compared
to the FX. He changed something that did the trick, well, most of it anyway!
Auto line feeds was ON for my old 8 bit, turned it OFF and it works fine. The
changes he made will be incorperated in the FX-80 version which should now
work on any MX-80. That FX-80 version will be included in the next SpeedoGDOS
update.
Are the FAX files generated by STraight FAX! generic? Meaning, if one could
get a FAX file in the right disk formatt, could it be loaded into another
platforms FAX program?

No. STFAX files aren't generic. But STFAX converts its fax files to IMG files

The answer is both yes and no. There is no one standard FAX file format. While
all FAX files use the same CCITT Group 3 compression, there are different
headers, bit ordering, graphic line bit alignment, etc. Your best bet is to
just export a FAX file as one of the many supported file types. The CCITT
Group 3 TIFF format is actually just a type of FAX file.

The setting in the Popup in the FAX Manager CPX is only for choosing which
driver that you want to configure a default path into. It has absolutely no
effect on an application. The Current Output Path, sets the output path that
all of the STraight FAX! drivers will use. This value is saved into the CPX.
The Popup menu setting is not saved into the CPX, as it does not mean
anything. Its just a temporary value that will specify which driver to
configure a default path into when the Configure Driver button is selected.

Have you tried it in True Color modes?
To: Y.DUFRESNE,
This feature is also known as Distinctive Ringing or Ident-a-Ring. It is
commonly used in a situation where several roommates share the same residence.
Each roommate can tell if the call is for them by the cadence of the phone
rings.
> a very good idea to be able to configure SF to only answer one of the ring
Unless the FAX Modem supports detection of different ring cadences, there is
nothing that can be done witin the scope of the FAX software or the FAX Modem.
The only FAX Modems that I know of the have the distinctive ring detection
capability are the ZyXEL FAX Modems. You will need some type of external
hardware to detect the ring cadence. This device is available from the AT&T
Business Center @ 1-800-451-2100. I think it is called the SR2 Adaptor and
sells for $99.

his > company had a brand-new FAX machine that did Class 2 and Class 3. My

STraight FAX
Class 1 & 2 are standards that define the DTE (computer) to DCE (FAX Modem)
communication and control. All Class 1 & 2 FAX Modems are Group 3 compliant.
Group 3 is the standard that defines how FAX Machines and FAX Modems must
operate to communicate with one another. Your friend is mixing up Class vs.
Group (for a detailed discussion of Class vs. Group, download our SYSINFO
program from the ST RT File Library, see below).
Class 3 will be a future FAX Modem standard one day. There is also a Class
2.0, which is the official version of Class 2. Class 2.0 is relatively new and
the only FAX Modem we know of that supports it is a US Robotics Courier FAX
Modem (its both Class 1 and Class 2.0). There is also a Group 4 FAX standard,
which defines FAX communication at 64000 baud on an ISDN line. One day soon,
we will all have some type of fiber optic connection in our homes such as
ISDN, assuming that the Information Super Highway has an exit ramp near by ;-
).
BTW, there are also Group 1 and 2 FAX standards, which are now obsolete. As
you can see, it is easy to get the Group and Class confused with all the
different versions around.
Back to the original problem... Can you find out the model/brand of FAX
Machine that your friend is using?
> Just a thought, but I believe I read somewhere that with STraight FAX the >

In version 1.xx of STraight FAX!, the Serial Fix CPX must have the RTS/CTS
setting unlocked. However, as of version 2.xx, STraight FAX! will use a
feature in Serial Fix 2.0 to unlock the RTS/CTS setting of Serial Fix and
restore its state afterwards.

> > What version of MultiTOS are you using? V1.04 is the latest official

it displays upon startup.
I was incorrect about the latest MultiTOS release version. It is actually
MultiTOS 1.00, however the MiNT version is 1.04 and the AES version is 4.00. I
just wanted to clear that up. These are the version numbers that our
SYSINFO.PRG will report for this version of MultiTOS.
As per the problem with the system crashing under MultiTOS with the Cyrel
graphics card at 1280x1024x256 when a submenu is displayed, I would suspect
that the problem could be with the combination of MultiTOS and the Cyrel
graphics card. Since the problem does not occur for you in the same graphics
mode with Geneva (which also provides the submenu capability of AES 4.00) and
since it does not crash under MultiTOS on a Falcon in 640x480x256 or
640x400x65536, I do not think that the problem is in STraight FAX!.
STraight FAX! does not detach and re-attach the submenus. When you move the
mouse over a submenu, the AES has to save the screen area of the submenu to a
buffer, so that it can be restored afterwards. This is where I suspect the
problem exists. Something in the VDI drivers provided with the Cyrel does not
get along with MultiTOS/AES4.00. Have you sent mail to CYBERCUBE?
BTW, If you want to send down your TT030 with the Cyrel card (please also
include the monitor), we will be happy to test it out to isolate the problem.
However, it might take a few months to do this ;-).
To: SUPRATECH,
Thank you for your input. I am very happy that Supra is able monitor this

What version of TOS is in the Falcon030? Please install FPATCH2.PRG in the
AUTO folder and set the Modem Port to Device 7.
This problem sounds like a flow control problem. Have you tried both XON/XOFF
and RTS/CTS flow control? If you are using RTS/CTS, then make sure that the RS-
232 cable has these signals.
While your FAX Modem uses a Rockwell chipset, it may have firmware from the
vendor. What are the commands in the modem manual for setting the flow
control? Normally these are AT&K3 and AT&K4 (except for US Robotics FAX
Modems).
Also try setting the Output I/O Buffer to both a minimum of 256 bytes and a
maximum of 32767 bytes.
Does this problem occur when receiving? Flow control is not in effect when
receiving, so please let me know if it can receive.
A.FASOLDT,
Its too bad that GEnie is not full MultiMedia yet, otherwise you could

It is good advice to isolate phone lines from AC Power lines and other wiring.
Other phone devices can also effect a FAX Modem. For instance, with my Supra
V.32 FAX Modem, it cant connect to another FAX if my US Robotics Courier modem
is also connected in the phone circuit. Strange but true.
To: D.STMARTIN,

Use Serial Fix 2.0. Its the freeware patch that is in the ST RT File Library.
Its better than Serial Patch 2 and incorporates its features. It fixes the
RTS/CTS problem in TOS versions prior to 4.00.
> I believe I'm dealing with TWO seperate problems here. My guess is that the

Try XON/XOFF mode, this will isolate this problem and confirm your suspicions.
Since the routines used for Class 1 are different than those used for Class 2,
this would also be a good test, i.e. try it in Class 1 and Class 2 and see if
the problem persists.
You might want to download the SYSINFO program (see below) and send me the
results.
To: ALL,
Please download the SYSINFO program that Dave Troy of TOAD-SERV. uploaded to
the file library this past week. It will tell you alot about your FAX Modem
and also the computer setup.
If you are having a problem, you can send the SYSINFO.TXT file to me as
private GEMail. Please dont post these files here in the message base as they
can get to be over 10K bytes long on some systems. Archiving them (ZIP
preferred) and attaching the file as mail is the besy way to send these files
to me.

Back a few months ago on the Supra BBS, they had an excellent exchange of
messages about modems on phone lines and supposedly general voice lines meet
the requirements for 9600 baud and if they say less then you should look at

caught 9600 though.

Using the FAX Manager CPX, you can set the output path of any of the
STraight FAX! printer drivers to anything you want. You can configure both the
default path in the driver and the Current Output Path, that overrides the
default path. There is no way to have a driver use the name of the document,
since there is no communication of this information to the driver.

I have a zoom fax modem 9600 baud. Using it on a Mega STE. On about 3 of the
7 or 8 fax machines I've faxed so far, upon connecting, the baud rate drops
back during what is described as a training session. First to 7200, then
4800 then 2400. It then says its timing out because the remote user
connection couldn't be established. I am using modem port 2. A class 1 fax
modem. I read the previous posts about possible problems and I have tried the
S36=0 command in the init string, but my modem command doesn['t include a S36
register. The machines I can't connect to are a variety of makes and models,
one a raven, another a computer modem. The same machines never work while I
have not yet had any problems at all faxing to the other ones that do
work. Is there anything else I could try in the init string? Thanks.

Charles,
STFax detects the ring indicator signal from the RS232C port, right?? If the
signal follow the led on the modem, then it properly indicates when the phone
is actually rigning. Implementing a pattern recognition along with the ring
counter does seem very possible, although I probably don't have any idea of
the amount of programming involved. At the present time, I can say for sure
that the signal is routed properly to STFax as it counts two rigns for each
double-rign on the second number here. I can't tell for the other modems out
there, but my Smart One is doing this as it would be necessary. If you don't
wish to implement the feature in STFax, fine. But don't tell me it's
impossible. When I was looking for an anwsering machine, I asked every
salesperson I met, including the Bell Canada representant if there was a
device available to distinguish the patterns and I've been told, everytime,
"IMPOSSIBLE". Now, RadioShack sells the little gizmo for $189 (CDN).

Charles,
Thanks....I already knew how to set the path, and have done so. The thing is,
if I compose several letters in Pagestream and print them to fax, it would be
nice to know what they are without having to view them, and as is, they are
all named PSDOC.Jxx. When printing to a disk file (instead of to PAR), the
item selector appears, which gives an opportunity to name the document before
printing it. Would it be possible to write an option into the driver to name
the fax file?

To: ALGORHYTHM,
If you open the FAX Manager CPX and keep its window open, but off to the
side, you can easily go back to this window and change the Current Output Path
prior to printing a different document.
When Pagestream is configured to print to a disk file, then the FAX Manager
is not used and us unaware of the filename/path that you will select via the
File Selector that Pagestream displays prior to printing to disk. The other
limitation of using this method, is that you can only print one page at a
time, otherwise the 2nd, 3rd, etc. pages will be appended to the end of the
file and will not be usable.
The driver itself can not display a file selector, since its not a true
program. The driver is just a set of routines that the application calls. Each
printer driver is slightly different in the way it is called or invoked by an
application. There is no way to do what you] are suggesting, unless the
application was changed to support it.
To: Y.DUFRESNE,
STraight FAX! does not monitor the Ring Indicator signal on the RS-232 port,
it counts RING response codes coming from the FAX Modem. This method is more
reliable and also is not dependent on which RS-232 port is being used.
Yes there are devices available to distinugish rings cadences. How this is
done in Canada may be different than how this is done in the US.
I mentioned one of these devices in my previous message.
BTW, the Ring Indicator is simply an interrupt signal on the computer that
can be polled or allowed to interrupt the CPU. It is implemented differently
for the MFP-ST port and the SCC based ports on the Mega STe and TT030. On the
Falcon030, the SCC port's RI signal is connected to the MFP, similar to the
MFP-ST port. On a TT030, the MFP-2 based port (Serial 1) does not have a RI
signal. Another factor is that the modem cable must also have the RI signal
connected.
There is no way to insure that every FAX Modem will report the same type of
RI pattern for a specific Ring Cadence. From my experiences with various FAX
Modems, just getting vendors to agree on what commands in a standard mean is
sometimes asking alot.

True, but I don't want to do that. I've got a FAX\OUTGOING folder set up for

Just downloaded the HSMODA02.LZD file from here in the ST roundtable. It's a
collection of programs that replace the TOS serial routines, supposedly making
them faster and less buggy.
I'm using a Mega STe and found the following configuration usable with
STraight FAX!:
Copied to auto folder (in this order)
DRVIN.PRG
MFP.PRG
The program SCC.PRG causes STraight FAX to give an error message saying the
faxmodem could not be initialized, although it works alright with Interlink.
Other computers (Falcon,TT) use different programs. The docs explain which to
use (although they are badly translated from the original German).
Don't know if the programs actually do what they say, but I'll try them for a
while and see if I notice a difference.

I've printed somes faxs where parts of characters were missing but viewed
okay, although the font used created characters that were very thin at places.
If I "thickened" the window, it then printed fine.
Since I'm using a Epson MX-80, a 9 pin printer. Would using a 24 pin
printer eliminate the need the to "thicken" it? Or is this a problem when
certain fonts are used?

The Popup menu is used to simply select which driver that you wish to
configure the default path into. Its state will be maintained by the XControl
Panel Desk Acc as long as XControl is memory resident and as log as the FAX
Manager CPX is not unloaded or all CPX's reloaded.
A future version of the CPX will also save the last selected driver that the
Popup displays and also save the path/file name for each of the drivers (i.e.
Original GDOS, FSM/Font GDOS, Speedo GDOS, Pagestream 1.8x, Pagestream 2.x,
Calamus 1.09x, Calamus S/SL, That's Write 2 Normal, That's Write 2 Fine and
That's Write 3). This will allow finding the driver alot faster so that it can
be updated.

The resolution of a 9 pin printer of 120 x 144 DPI is less than that of a
203 x 196 DPI Fine Rez FAX File. Some fine detail will be lost when you print
to a 9 pin printer. The thinken command can make some of these areas visible
when printing to a low rez type of printer.

Hi all,
Just received Straight Fax 2.1 and installed. Will be using it with a ZOOM
AFX faxmodem. (2400 data,4800 send, 9600 receive)
To get the data line to work I had to set the AT&C2&w0 command. This got it
working well. I cannot get the fax line to work properly.
I have been able to connect to a remote machine, but get the message that _it_
disconnected unexpectedly, when my friend at the receiving end said his
machine says I broke the connection.
I tried setting the regesters in the fax location (W1?) to C1&D2 as someone
had suggested, but still no go.
Anyone got suggestion on how to get this thing running? Also, if I don't want
to print from within STFax, do I need to have GDOS installed?
Thanks,
Matt

To: M.RIVMAN1,
There is no need to set any special modem registers with a Zoom AFX FAX
Modem. We have a Zoom AFX and there is no problem connecting to the FAX
Machines or FAX Modems that we have tested. Do you know what type of FAX
Machine that is on the other end?
I would recommend making sure that Serial Fix 2.0 is installed in the AUTO
folder and also download the SYSINFO program that was uploaded by TOAD-SERV.
It will analyze the FAX Modem and system and write the results to a file,
which you can archive and send to me (C.S.SMETON) as an attached file in
GEMail.
GDOS is used for printing FAXes in STraight FAX! and also for rendering GEM
Metafiles into FAX format/viewing GEM Metafiles. If you would like to print by
exporting FAX files to Image format and using another utility, then GDOS does
not have to be installed. With Font GDOS or Speedo GDOS, there are minimal
conflicts to worry about, which is very different than the original GDOS.

Thanks for the oh-so-quick reply, Charles!
I added the Serial Fix 2.0 back into my AUTO line up, and also set the
Faxmodem memory register to &Y1 which always has it starting in fax mode.
So far, I have tested it 3 times. The first file was created in STeno, and
converted to fax file from ASCII. That is the one I couldn't get to work so
many times.
The receiving machine. Hmmm, it's one of those Fax/telephone machines. I'll
have to ask my buddy the make and model #.
The other two faxes I tried were attempted after both the SERFX20.PRG and &Y1
were added as variables. Both times the send seemed to work perfectly.
I'll check out the SYSINFO prg. and let you know the make of the troubling fax
machine... if I can't get it to work.
Thanks again,

Finally got things working. Decided to attempt installing FontGDOS again.
Worked fine this time. (though any attempt to use the WordFlair prg from the
ST Format cover still gives me a 'not enough memory for GDOS buffer' msg.!)
(largest block free is over 1meg)
Until I get used to converting incoming fax's to import into Calamus or PgS, I
will most likely run FGDOS ala boot manager set up only when I plan to print
from the STraight Fax prg.
Still have been unable to get past the Training step trying to send to a

'Error - romote fax disconnected unexpectedly' msg. Sends to all other
machines have been fine so far. Guess I'll keep experimenting with that one.

I've been having problems sending faxes to a Minolta and Brother fax machine.
Both are top of the line models. I'm using a Zoom 24/96 fax modem and STFax
2.10 running from a Mega 4 w/TOS 2.06 at 16mhz. The modem negotiates a 9600
connection and then does nothing for about a minute, after which the
connection is lost.
I've been able to successfully fax to several other fax machines. I've also
had some problems trying to fax to a friend using manual send and manual
receive. The modem coneects but no data is transmitted.
I've read the docs but can't seem to get this to work. I had no trouble
getting my Zyxel modem to fax, although I never tried to send to the Brother
or Minolta. When I get it back I'll try it, but in the meantime I'd like to
get the Zoom to work.
Thanks.

STraight FAX! 2.10 Tech Support Notes 1/20/94
=====================================
Note:
The following recommendations are based on test results that we have
conducted at NewSTar Technology Management. These recommendations have
proven successful in our testing. Individual results may vary, depending
on the computer model, TOS version, serial port used, FAX Modem, etc.
The latest version of STraight FAX! is version 2.10. Registered users of
STraight FAX! version 2.00 can upgrade to STraight FAX! version 2.10 for
free by downloading the upgrade from our support BBS (410-544-6999). Please
call the BBS and leave private E-mail to "Charles", requesting the upgrade
from version 2.00 to version 2.10.
Registered users of STraight FAX! version 1.00 through 1.07 can upgrade to
version 2.10 for $25.00 (US) by sending there original master disk, name,
address and 10 digit Registration Number to:
STraight FAX! 2.10 Upgrade Offer
570F Ritchie Highway
Severna Park, Maryland 21146 USA
1. The STraight FAX! Master disk contains 3 patch programs (from Atari)
that are for the following computers/TOS versions:
a) TOS14FX2.PRG - TOS 1.04 (520 ST, 520STFM 1040ST, Mega ST2/3 & STacy)
b) SERPTCH2.PRG - TOS 2.05 (Mega STe)
TOS 3.05 (TT030)
c) FPATCH2.PRG - TOS 4.00-4.04 (Falcon030)
If you have one of these TOS versions, the STraight FAX! 2.10 Installation
program will detect this and display a dialog box that will allow for
installation of the proper patch.
2. There are additional patch programs that either replace or work in
addition
to the Atari patch programs, depending on the TOS version in use.
If the computer is any model prior to a Falcon030, i.e. any ST, Mega ST, STe,
Mega STe or TT030 model, with a TOS version of 1.00 through 3.06, then the
Serial Fix 2.0 third party patch program is recommended for installation in
the AUTO folder. This should be used in place of one of the above Atari patch
programs for TOS versions 1.04, 2.05 or 3.05 and should also be used for
other TOS versions (1.00, 1.02, 1.06, 1.062, 2.06, 3.06).
Use of RTS/CTS Flow Control requires the Serial Fix 2.0 patch to be installed
in the AUTO folder.
Serial Fix 2.0 includes a CPX module that allows locking the RTS/CTS Flow
Control mode on the serial port (Modem Port/Modem 1). STraight FAX! versions
2.00 and higher will override the RTS/CTS lock when accessing the Serial
Port and restore the state of the RTS/CTS lock afterwards.
Note: Do not install Serial Fix 2.0 at the same time as either TOS14FX2 or
SERPTCH2. Serial Fix 2.0 contains the capabilities of these patch programs,
so they should not be installed with Serial Fix 2.0, otherwise these patches
may conflict with Serial Fix 2.0.
Serial Fix 2.0 (SERFX20.LZH) is available from our support BBS and from
the Atari ST support areas on major online services. The file listing for
Serial Fix 2.0 on GEnie is listed below:
*********************************
Number: 27506 Name: SERFX20.LZH
Address: BPENNER Date: 930130
Approximate # of bytes: 10880
Number of Accesses: 521 Library: 2
Description:
Serial Fix 2.0 is a patch program to correct a couple problems with
use of ST/STe/TT Modem 1 port (or the only serial port for older ST's)
with high speed modems requiring RTS/CTS operation. This version also
includes SERPATCH and TOS14FIX from Atari and will automatically
implement what fixes are required for your version of TOS. Serial Fix
2.0 is a universal fix and works with TOS versions 1.0 through 2.06
and 3.0 through 3.06.

---------------------------------
3. If the computer is a Falcon030 with TOS versions 4.00 through 4.04, then
the Atari patch FPATCH2.PRG should be installed in the AUTO folder. When
FPATCH2.PRG is installed, the Serial Port used by STraight FAX! should be
set to "Device 7 (Modem Port)". Device 6 should not be used, as it is not
connected to any physical RS-232 connector on the Falcon030.
The Bconmap Fix 2 third party patch program is recommended to be installed
in the AUTO folder so that it runs after FPATCH2.PRG. Bconmap Fix 2 will
allow STraight FAX! (and other applications) to work with Device 6 or Device
7
as the Serial Port on the Falcon030.
Bconmap Fix 2 (BMAPFIX2.LZH) is available from our support BBS and from
the Atari ST support areas on major online services. The file listing for
Bconmap Fix 2 on GEnie is listed below:
*********************************
Number: 30081 Name: BMAPFIX2.LZH
Address: H.CARSON1 Date: 930918
Approximate # of bytes: 2688
Number of Accesses: 168 Library: 2
Description:
This is the latest version of the Bconmap Fix program for the Falcon Auto
Folder. It can also be run as a program from the desktop. It should be plac
aced after FPATCH2.PRG in your Auto Folder. It is a final (hopefully!)
serial port fix.

4. STraight FAX! will operate will all TOS versions known to date, including
TOS 1.00 through TOS 4.04 and MultiTOS. However for optimal operation of
RS-232 and File I/O, a newer TOS version is strongly recommended.
For 520 ST, 520STFM, Mega ST 2/4 and STacy computers, TOS 1.04 can be
installed in either a 2 chip or 6 chip configuration.
For 520 ST, 520STFM, Mega ST 2/4 and STacy computers, TOS 2.06 can be
installed in either a 2 chip configuration using an add-on card, such as
the TEC board from Codehead Technologies.
For the STe and MegaSTe, TOS 2.06 can be installed in 2 chip configuration.
For the TT030, TOS 3.06 can be installed in 2 chip configuration.
For the Falcon030, TOS 4.04 can be installed in a single chip configuration.

5. STraight FAX! supports both older FAX Modems that do not support automatic
baud rate sensing and newer FAX Modems (such as those that support V.42bis,
V.32 and V.32bis Data communications) that do support automatic baud rate
sensing.
If the FAX Modem supports automatic baud rate sensing, then the Auto Baud
parameter in the Modem Preferences should be enabled. This will allow for
faster initialization of the FAX Modem. If FAX modem does not support
automatic baud rate sensing, then the Auto Baud parameter should be disabled.
While most FAX Modems that support automatic baud rate sensing, will operate
with the Auto Baud parameter in either state, there are some FAX Modems that
that support automatic baud rate sensing, that will not properly initialize
if the Auto Baud parameter is disabled. In particular, the Zoom AFX and
other FAX Modems based on the same Rockwell FAX Modem chipset require that
the Auto Baud paremeter be enabled. These FAX Modems are Class 1 only FAX
Modems that send at a maximum baud rate of 9600 baud, but receive at a
maximum baud rate of 4800 baud and are 2400 baud data modems. This is a
relatively inexpensive FAX Modem by current standards and sells in the
under $100 range.
6. The RS-232 communications can also be enhanced by increasing the size
of the RS-232 I/O Buffers for the specified Serial Port. Increasing the
I/O Buffers can be accomplished using an external utility such as the
AUXINIT.PRG (placed in the AUTO folder) that comes with Gribnif's STalker 3
terminal program. STraight FAX! also allows increasing the I/O Buffer sizes
in the Modem Preferences. Increase the size up to 32767 bytes for both the
Input and Output buffers for maximum throughput.
7. Older model US Robotics Sportster FAX Modems will have problems connecting
to certian FAX Machines, such as Pitney Bowes FAX Machines. These Sportsters
can be identified by the serial number on the bottom of the FAX Modem.
If the serial number starts with 00026801 or higher for the Sportster 14400
FAX Modem or 00026501 for the Sportster 9600 FAX Modem, then the Sportster
is a newer model. Please contact US Robotics if the Sportster is an older
model.
If the Sportster is a newer model, then a special Init String must be entered
into the Modem Preferences to allow proper connection to Pitney Bowes FAX
Machines. This special Init String is:
S36=0
and should only be present when connecting to a Pitney Bowes FAX Machine.
8. STraight FAX! requires exclusive use of the specified serial port when
sending or receiving FAXes. Other resident programs can interfere with
STraight FAX!'s ability to communicate with the serial port. In particular
if another terminal program is resident in memory, it may "steal" bytes
arriving at the serial port away from STraight FAX! and cause it to fail
to properly communicate and/or fail to initialize the FAX Modem.
If another program is using the same serial port as STraight FAX!, try one
or more of the following:
- If the conflicting program has an internal disable feature, activate the
disable feature when using STraight FAX!.
- If the conflicting program can be set to another serial port (on computers
with multiple serial ports), then set the program to use a different
serial port when using STraight FAX!.
- If the above does not solve the problem, quit the conflicting program or
disable it from running it it is a desk accessory (i.e. such as Gribnif's
STalker 3 terminal program that also runs as a desk accessory).
With the advent of Atari's MultiTOS and Gribnif's Geneva multitasking
operating systems and with the capability to run STraight FAX! as a desk
accessory (as of version 2.10), many combinations can exist where both
STraight FAX! and another program that uses a serial port are active at the
same time.
9. Screen Saver programs should be configured to watch for RS-232 activity so
that the Screen Saver does not activate while STraight FAX! is sending or
receiving a FAX. If the Screen Saver activates while a FAX transfer is in
progress, it may use sufficient CPU time to interfere with STraight FAX!
Depending on the Screen Saver in use, the method it uses to detect RS-232
activity may or may not detect the RS-232 activity of STraight FAX!
Note: While STraight FAX! is waiting to send or receive a FAX, operation of
a Screen Saver should not cause any problems, as long as the Screen Saver
deactivates when RS-232 activity begins.
10. Some FAX Modems support both the EIA standard Class 1 and the defacto
standard Class 2 modes of operation. STraight FAX! 2.00 and higher supports
both modes of operation. Recently the EIA approved the Class 2 standard,
however it is very different from the defacto Class 2 standard that has
been in use. The official EIA Class 2 standard is known as Class 2.0, to
avoid confusion.
STraight FAX! 2.10 does not support Class 2.0. The only FAX Modem that
supports Class 2.0 to the best of our knowledge is the US Robotics Courier
HST FAX Modem. Older Courier HST FAX Modems mat require an upgrade to
support Class 2.0, however the Courier HST FAX Modems also support the
Class 1 standard.
Class 2.0 support is being evaluated for support in a future version of
STraight FAX!.
If the FAX Modem supports both Class 1 and the defacto Class 2 modes (such as
the Supra FAX Modem Plus, Supra V.32/V.32bis and Zoom FAX Modems), then
both modes should be tried, as one mode may provide better results over the
other. As of STraight FAX! 2.10, separate parameters are available for
seting the FAX Class for sending and receiving.
11. Phone Line wires should be isolated from AC power cords and other wiring
to minimize phone line noise and interference. Phone line noise can disrupt
FAX communications or cause poor quality FAX transmission.
12. FAX Modem vendors upgrade the firmware in the FAX Modem to increase
compatibility and to add additional features. Please check the firmware
version in your FAX Modem using one or more of the following commands, sent
from a terminal program:
ATI3
AT+FREV? (Class 2 FAX Modems only)
Note: the command to return the firmware revision be different for some FAX
Modems, please refer to the FAX Modem manual if the above commands are
not sucecssful in returning the firmware revision.
It is strongly recommended that you have the latest firmware revision for
your FAX Modem. Please contact the FAX Modem maufacturer for firmware upgrade
availability and pricing.
13. FAX Modems that also support 14400 baud V.32bis data communications may
also support 14400 baud (V.17) FAX communications. Most FAX Machines are
limited to 9600 baud FAX communications. Unless it is known that the remote
FAX Machine/Modem supports 14400 baud, it is recommended that the FAX Baud
Rate in the Modem Preferences be set to 9600 baud. In many cases this will
reduce the handshaking time between the FAX devices.

OK folks,
Now I'm confused. After reading the post from C. Smeton about the importance
of the SERFX20 prg/cpx I added the cpx to the CP.
The odd thing is... when sending a fax, it changes from the locked, to the
unlocked position. I know the post said STFAX would override the Serial Fix
patch, but I thought locked would be the desired way?
Of course... I am not the most knowledgeable in these matters... after all, I
went 'cheap' on the ZOOM AFX and now I can't get into some of the mass
produced phone/fax machines out there! Well, they answer, but never stay
connected through the 'training' time.
(what can I say...Grampa Al... U wuz rite!) <G>

Charles,
I had a problem receiving a Fax today from a Pitney Bowes machine. ST FAX
detected the answer tone, but that was it. The ID line of the sending machine
was dispalying something like FST1+++ FST1+++ FST1+++.
This is the first problem I've encountered so I'm not too worried, but do you
have any suggestions to correct the problem?
Thanks--Rob

To: R.SCHILLING,
What FAX modem do you have. Sportster FAX Modems (older models) can not
connect to Pitney Bowes FAX Machines. Please check the message that I posted a
few days ago about this.
To: M.RIVMAN1,
Locking the RTS/CTS mode with the Serial Fix 2.0 CPX is for use with older
programs, such as the original Flash, that do not have an option of setting
RTS/CTS mode.
STraight FAX! has an option to set RTS/CTS or XON/XOFF mode. If the RTS/CTS
mode was locked by the Serial Fix 2.0 CPX, and was not unlocked by STraight
FAX!, you would not be able to use XON/XOFF mode in STraight FAX!. STraight
FAX! would try to set XON/XOFF mode in the computer, but would not be able to
do so. STraight FAX! would be able to set XON/XOFF mode in the FAX Modem, so
there would be a problem sending as the modem and computer would be using
different flow control modes.
Since STraight FAX! 2.00 and up unlock the RTS/CTS lock in the Serial Fix
2.0 CPX, it does not matter what state it is in. What is important is what
STraight FAX! has set AND that Serial Fix 2.0 is installed in the AUTO folder.
Please refer to the Serial Fix 2.0 documentation for more info on using the
CPX.
To: All,
If you download our System Information program (SYSINFO.ZIP, file number
31589), you can send the results (SYSINFO.TXT) file to us via GEnie F-Mail.
Please ZIP the file before sending. It would also be helpful to edit this file
with a text editor and place your name and address along with the Registration
Number at the start of the file.

Charles,
I guess I'm pretty obtuse, as I'm still puzzled!
If STraight Fax! unlocks the Serial Fix 2.0 CPX and uses XON/XOFF to talk with
the computer, does it then relock RTS/CTS mode when sending fax data? I have
the RTS/CTS selected in the 'modem' preferences menu within STraight Fax!.
Should I be using the XON/XOFF option? (MSTe TOS 2.05)
Also, I'll take it that it is the nature of this inexpensive ZOOM AFX that
prohibits STraight Fax! from sending a fax to some fax machines. (As I said, I
have always been able to connect, but contact is broken during the time the
'training' msg. is on the STraight Fax screen, and so far, _always_ by the
receiving machine.)
Guess I really want to be sure that changing modems will rid me of this
'incompatability', and that I have tried everything I can within STraight Fax!
to correct it.
My ignorance is maddening, but you don't learn, if you don't ask!
Many thanks,
Matt

Matt,
They were assuming you were using the default XON/XOFF. If you leave it
selected as RTS/CTS then SERFX20 will stay locked. If you are not having
problems with RTS/CTS then there is no need to change it. I run with RTS/CTS
for both data and FX using TOS 1.00. Haven't had a problem since I went to
the 1.7J (or H?) ROMs in my SUPRA. I now have the 1.8 version and still have
not had any problems.

Thanks for the response. The odd thing is, everything seems to be working OK,
it's just that when I run STraight Fax!, and call up the Serial Fix 2.0 CPX,
it shows it is unlocked. If I quite STFAX and check it from the Desktop, it
shows as it should be... locked on RTS/CTS. (I am currently in Aladdin.PRG
and checked the SerFix CPX.. it's locked...Hang on a sec... I just switched
over to STFAX to check. It seems that the SERFIX CPX only shows RTS/CTS as
unlocked when the modem is in Auto Answer mode. When Auto Answer is disabled,
the CPX shows as locked. I give up. I guess there is nothing I can do within
the STraight Fax! prg that will make this modem able to send fax data to those
few machines I can't now reach. Let's see... I've got a Computer Shopper

To: All Supra FAX Modem owners,
The following is provided as a service to Supra FAX Modem owners. The
information below was obtained from Supra's support area on another
service. NewStar Technology Management takes no responsibility for
the accuracy of the information below. Please send E-Mail to SUPRATECH
here on GEnie for additional information.
Note: Supra has changed the chipset in their V.32bis and 144LC FAX Modems
to a newer Rockwell chipset. The firmware version numbering is different
for the new chipset. Please refer to the information below to determine
if a firmware update is available or necessary for your FAX Modem.
Use the SYSINFO program that was uploaded to the ST RT File Library to
determine the exact chipset and firmware in your FAX Modem.
Note: Based on information provided to us by a user who ran the SYSINFO
program on a newer model Suprta 144LC, this FAX Modem is now both Class 1
and Class 2 compatible. However, the firmware ROM in the FAX Modem did
not have the Silent Answer support in it. We have heard that this may
have been a production error and update firmware is available to correct
this problem. Please contact Supra if your 144LC or V.32bis FAX Modem
does not support Silent Answer (as reported by the SYSINFO program).
Thank You,
Charles @ NewSTar

ROM INFORMATION FOR SupraFAXmodems.
You do NOT need a ROM upgrade for your modem if you currently have:
- SupraFAXmodem Plus, 24/96i, or 144PB
- SupraFAXmodem V.32, V.32bis, 144LC with 1.7/1.8 ROMs
- SupraFAXmodem V.32bis, 144LC with 1.40 ROMs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
You might want to consider upgrading the ROM in your modem if:
- ATi3 reveals v1.000; v1.200-C, H, J, or L An upgrade to the current 1.8x
ROM
will help with fax and data connections under adverse telephone line
conditions.
- ATi3 reveals v1.7x and you are having faxing problems, especially with drop-
outs between pages. There is only a subtle difference between the 1.7x and
1.8x code in the faxing. An upgrade from 1.7x to 1.8x is not recommended for
most users.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Summary:
SupraFAXmodem 24/96i: Rockwell ATF chipset. No ROM upgrades available.
SupraFAXmodem Plus: Rockwell 9624 chipset. No ROM upgrades available.
SupraFAXmodem 144PB: Rockwell ACL chipset. No ROM upgrades available.
SupraFAXmodem 144LC: Rockwell AC and ACI chipsets. The current ROM for the
AC
modem is 1.80-05x. The current ROM for ACI modem is 1.40-C05.
SupraFAXmodem V.32: Rockwell AC chipset. Current ROM is 1.80-05.
SupraFAXmodem V.32bis external: AC and ACI chipsets. Current ROMs are 1.80-
05
and 1.40-06 respectively.
SupraFAXmodem V.32bis internal: AC and ACI chipsets. Current ROMs are
1.80-05p and 1.40-06p respectively.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
ROCKWELL CHIPSET AND ROM INFORMATION
When Rockwell issues a new chipset, they also release new code for the ROMs.
The AC chipset started out with ROM code 1.000 and has now progressed to
1.80x.
We are currently building modems based upon the Rockwell ACI and ACL chipsets
which are basically the same except the ACL uses less power (we use it in the
144PB internal modem for the Powerbook). The ACL modems use ROM v1.298 and
the
ACI modems use 1.40x. ROM numbering starts over for each new chipset.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
ROM INFORMATION for the SupraFAXmodem 144LC, V.32, and V.32bis
The current ROM revision can be obtained from the modem by issuing ATi3 from
your terminal software. Examples of terminal software include Procomm,
Telix,
Comit for DOS or Microphone, Zterm, White Knight for the Macintosh.
The resulting code will looks something like: V1.200-H TR14-Jxxx 053
The example above shows us that the modem has Supra version -H of Rockwell's
1.2 code. The V.32 and V.32bis modems were originally issued with V1.000 and
quickly updated with V1.200 code in early 1992. By October, 1992 the final
1.2
upgrade offered was the V1.200-H and -J (identical except that -J had caller
id).
The 1.2-H and -J code was the most reliable and stable code from the 1.000
and
1.200 series of releases. Improvements included increased compatibility with
a
wider range of fax machines and the inclusion of the S109 and S110 registers
for improved connections under marginal telephone line conditions as well as
fall-forward/back capability to compensate for changing telephone line
conditions.
The V.32bis internal for DOS started shipping in late 1992 with V1.200-H
ROMs.
These ROMs exhibited buffer flow problems in some machines and were replaced
with V1.200-L ROMs. Supra did not offer a caller id upgrade for this modem
under the 1.200 code (-J ROMs exhibit the same problems as -H ROMs in this
modem).
Early in 1993 Rockwell released a new chipset and 1.7 ROM code to go with it.
The Supra V.32, V.32bis, and 144LC modems were manufactured with 1.7x ROMs
from
approximately March through mid-August of 1993. The 1.7 code was only
designed
to be compatible with the new Rockwell product. Supra modified the code and
released 1.70b as an upgrade for modems containing ROM code 1.2/earlier.
New features in the 1.7 ROM included adjustable busy signal detection, caller
id, Silent Answer capability with FAXstf (Macintosh), and enhanced handling
of
connections under marginal telephone line conditions. The 1.70b ROM had all
of
the data enhancements and most of the fax enhancements of the 1.71x ROMs.
Current ROMs for the AC-based modes contain 1.8x code which is compatible
with
all new and existing Supra V.32 and V.32bis modems. They are the same as the
1.71 ROMs with additional fax negotiation features. These ROMs work with all
of our AC based V.32 and V.32bis modems.
In July, 1993 Supra released the 144LC modem with an AC chipset and 1.71
ROMs.
In August, we decided to make the Silent Answer feature available for these
modems and released the 1.80x upgrade.
November, 1993: Switched over to the ACI chipset for the V.32bis internal,
external, and 144LC with v1.40 ROMs. These modems are using the new ACI
chipset so the ROM numbering started over with 1.4 (as compared to the AC
chipset which is currently on ROM v1.8).

Brad,
Get to Aladdin's terminal screen, and type AT&C1 and hit enter. Your modem
should return an OK. Then try logging on with Aladdin.
I had the same problem with the ZOOM AFX I got recently. Changing the DCD
setting with the &C1 command fixed all. Some machines may need the &D1 or& D2
also.
If all is well, you can save the command to the modems Non Volitile Memory
using the &Wn command. (the n is the memory location you want the command
saved to.) You will probably want to do this so you don't have to remember to
do it each time you log on.
In the AFX, &W0 will write to the Data (2400 baud) memory, and &W1 writes the
command to the Fax (9600 baud) memory. Your manual will show you which is
which. ;-)
Send me some Email if you need more help with it.

happen? The FX-80 printer driver does a lousy job, I would like to print right

To: R.SCHILLING,
Several FAX Modems have problems connecting to Pitney Bowes FAX machines,
including the US Robotics Sportster FAX Modems. you might want to contact the
modem vendor for a firmware upgrade, if one is available.
To: P.GRIFFITH2,
STraight FAX! prints via GDOS. If you print to a normal printer driver, it
should print the selected FAX files to the best resolution capability of the
printer. The STFAXxxx.SYS GDOS printer drivers will print to disk FAX files,
instead of printing to a printer. These drivers are not normally used from
within STraight FAX! to print a FAX file to another FAX file. They are meant
for printing from within other applications, such as Atari Works to allow
printing to disk pages from a document into a series of FAX files that can
later be transferred with STraight FAX!
To get better quality output, you will need a better printer that has a
higher resolution. A fine rez FAX is 203x196 DPI. The FX80 9-pin driver prints
at 120x144 DPI. If you print a FAX to a 9-pin printer some quality is lost due
to the lower resolution. If you printed to a 300x300 DPI device, such as a
Desk Jet or Laser printer, th output would be of much higher quality.

Paul,
I believe that the STFAXFSM.SYS driver is doing what it is supposed to. The
file it is outputting to disk is a fax format file. Just as the STFAX
PageStream or Calamus driver, when loaded into their respective programs, will
print a PgS or Calamus file, in fax format, to disk. The file will use the
.J01 extention, this tells us it is a fax file. (For use in STraight Fax!)
I don't use GDOS too often, so I can't be of much help there, but you might
see if your printer does any other emulations. Perhaps one of the other
FontGDOS drivers will give better output.
Hope this helps,
Matt

P.GRIFFITH2,
Speedo GDOS uses scalable fonts and bitmapped fonts. The scalable fonts from
Bitstream are of very high quality. Font GDOS only uses bitmapped fonts, and
the quality of these can vary from very good to not so good for public domain
bitmapped fonts.
STraight FAX! does not use fonts when it prints a FAX file, it just uses the
printer driver to scale a bitmap page (which is what a FAX file really is) to
the output device.
Your printer has emulation modes for an Epson FX at 120x144 DPI and also an
IBM Proprinter at 240 x 216 DPI. You need to find out if one of the other
supplied printer drivers that come with Font GDOS and Speedo GDOS will work
with your printer in the IBM Proprinter emulation mode. Try looking in the
Speedo GDOS topic in Cat 14 or send E-Mail to Mike Fulton at Atari (MIKE-
FULTON). He may be able to tell you if a driver is available to do this.

I recently upgraded to version 2.1 (from 1.7) and am very happy with the
improvements, but I have a couple of questions:
How much memory does STraight FAX! need when run as a desk
accesory? I have 4 meg in my Mega STe and am able to receive
a fax while running Touchup (which leaves 400K system memory)
but can't receive while running Pagestream (which leaves 70K
system memory).
Is it possible to scale received fax pages so the whole image
will be within the selected Speedo GDOS printer limits. With
some faxes I receive, I have to convert to IMG, import and
scale within Calamus, and then print out in order to see the
whole fax.

Glenn,
If the modem is Hayes command compatible you can issue the AT&V command to
print to screen the modems set commands. I think to work correctly with
STraight Fax! you must issue the command AT&C2 (C1 might also work)
The command to display settings, and what those settings mean should be in
your manual. If the modem has Non-Volatile RAM, you will be able to store the
setting to a memory register (&W0,W1 etc) so you will only have to enter the
setting once.
Hope this helps,

them to me (C.S.SMETON) as a file in GEMail.
To: G.GRAHAM9,
The PPI FAX Modems are Class 1 and Class 2. Some use the Rockwell chipsets and
firmware, which is what the Supra and Zoom FAX Modems use. We have not tested
every one of the PPI FAX Modems, but the 2400 FX96SA FAX Modem has been tested
and works. Note: PPI uses a different command (AT%CCID=1 vs. AT#CID=1) command
to enable Caller ID. Support for PPI's method of enabling Caller ID will be in
the next version of STraight FAX!.
Note: we cant test every FAX Modem as there are literally hundreds of
different FAX Modems on the market. Many are similar as they use chipsets and
firmware from the same companies (Rockwell, Sierra and Exar). We have
purchased what seem to be the most popular FAX Modems and use them in-house
for testing. Our Beta testers have a number of other FAX Modems that they test
and the purpose of the SysInfo program is to give the user some idea of
exactly what type of FAX Modem they have, i.e. a bit more information than is
written on the box, such as firmware revision, chipset vendor, etc.

The amount of memory used will vary depending on the TOS version and the
screen resolution. It will be somewhere in the vicinity of 400k bytes.
The problem with Pagestream is that it allocates (hogs) all of the available
RAM when it runs. This leaves none for STraight FAX! to use. Try enabling Auto
Receive prior to running STraight FAX!. If you have Multi-TOS or Geneva, you
can limit the amout of RAM a program can allocate. Otherwise, there is a PD
desk acc called DC Reserve that can reserve a set amount of RAM so that some
is left over when running a program such as Pagestream.

Hi folks, Charles,
I'm a bit lost and can't seem to find answers in the manual or beta doc's.
I'm obviously missing something.
I've just created and sent a cover page only. Transmission OK, 100%.
I then went to VIEW the COVERPAGE.J01 and of course, it is very large. Easy
enough to select the Half Page size. It's still larger than the letter size
page I have set for though.
When viewing, the graphic, then lots of space, and the 'normal' STraight Fax!
cover copy shows, but only up to the end of the TO: section. None of the text
from the FROM: section to end were shown onscreen at all. Also, when I print
it out via FontGDOS and Canon BJ10ex, it is printed at the expanded size.
(Later today I will find out what the receiving machine's output looked like)
Calling the Page Size option from the File menu gets a dialog box msg. which
states: ! ERROR In Alert Format, and allows me 3 buttons (labled 1,2,3) to
sellect. Selecting any one of them will read the disk in drive and seems to
reset the screen. What do the #'s 1,2 and 3 refer to?
If, after selecting any one of these #'s, I attempt to call the Page option
under the Preferences menu, I get bombs. Sometimes 2 sometimes up to 4.
What _should_ I see when I access this Page size option from under File?
Also - I can't for the life of me figure out how to have the output at real
letter size. All page settings are set to letter, but the output is much
larger than the original doc was in Calamus. Even the point size of the type
is larger than that it was written in.
Of course, perhaps this is what I should be able to set under Page size (in
the File menu) <G>
This occurs on clean and fully loaded systems. (MSTe 4 meg TOS 2.05)
Thanks,
Matt

Charles,
Thanks for your response (msg #14). Sorry it took so long for me to respond,
but I was a survivor of the Norhtridge earthquake. It took me a while to get
things back together. My keyboard was a casualty. The monitor (17") landed on
it--trashed some of the keys (had to get a new keyboard) . Fortunately the
monitor kept on going into my soft chair instead of the floor, so it is OK.
Anyway, to get to the point on the submenu problem. I agree with your analysis
that it is something with the MultiTOS/AES/Cyrel combination. I wrote a simple
C program to test submenues and sure enough they crash so it is has nothing to
do with STraight FAX. I will check with CYBERCUBE. So I guess I won't need to
send you my TT030/Cyrel card and monitor after all ;-).

Charles...
First off, let me say... The more I use STraight FAX!, and master more of the
features and short-cuts, the more I enjoy it. (I LOVE faxback services!!!)
I have found that one of the items I fax quite often are press- releases or
bulletins that I have pulled off of BBS's; most of these BBS's are IBM-based.
Many of these 'basically-text' files have been embellished with the IBM line-
drawing characters. Actually, quite attractive headings and graphics can be
accomplished with these characters.
When I print these out on my laser, using the symbol set 'HP IBM-US', they
print beautifully. When I fax these to someone else though, they of course
are converted via the characters in FINE.FNT, which is GEM-based. Needless to
say, the line-drawing characters no longer appear, and the faxes look very
bad.
*Are versions of NORMAL.FNT and FINE.FNT available that would translate
characters to fax format based on the IBM-US character set?
*If available, would it then be possible for a future STraight FAX! to allow a
FONT option when converting text files?
I KNOW this is an Atari program, but the ability to work even better with the
rather substantial IBM world and all its files would just be an extra plus for
STraight FAX!.

Don,
I had a similar problem a short time ago. I found that the Auto-Baud setting
under the Modem Preference options had been de-selected. I don't remember
doing it, but I've been having some problems getting my Zoom AFX faxmodem to
complete a fax send to a co-workers Sharp fax machine and my have changed it
when I was trying different settings.
Anyway, once I re-installed the program and re-selected Auto-Baud, all was
fine. Some modems need the Auto-Baud setting to be selected or STraight Fax!
will not initialize them.
The reason I had to reinstall the program is that I could get to the modem
pref. menu and select Auto-Baud, but each time I selected OK, it tried to re-
initialize the modem and I would get the error msg. I did a complete
reinstall, made all the changes as I want them, and saved the config. All
works well now.
Also... something to pay attention to: I have noticed that if I am working
with Aladdin, offline, reading messages and such, and launch STraight Fax!,
the modem will not initialize, and that dreaded message shows up. I don't
think Aladdin likes to give up control of the modem. I need to quit Aladdin,
then launch the fax program. Some other terminal prg's may do the same thing.
(Yes, I use Geneva, from Gribnif for multitasking. One of the best things an
Atarian can do for their systems, IMHO) <G>
Hope this is of some help,

To: J.MORRISON38,
> *Are versions of NORMAL.FNT and FINE.FNT available that would translate >
characters to fax format based on the IBM-US character set?
The fonts are in standard GDOS bitmap font format. They can be created with a
font editor such as Neocept's Fontz! or Font Kit Plus from the UK. They can
also be created from scalable fonts using a program such as BitMaker from
MegaType or C-Font from Compo.
The STraight FAX! fonts should contain at the minimum all characters starting
from ASCII 20H (' ') through ASCII 7EH (~). Other characters are optional. The
FAX fonts must be monospaced fonts, not proportional. The width of each
character in both the Fine and Normal Rez fonts must be 20 pixels. The height
for the Fine Rez font is 36 pixels and the height for a Normal Rez font is 18
pixels.
Other fonts can be renamed to FINE.FNT and NORMAL.FNT and used in place of
these supplied fonts. Beyond that the user is on their own, as there are no
sources for bit mapped fonts in FAX resolutions. Also with the advent of
scalable font technologies such as Bitstream Speedo fonts in Speedo GDOS,
Calamus fonts in Calamus and Adobe Type 1 fonts in Pagestream 2.x, bitmapped
fonts have become obsolete.
If you substitute your own fonts for FINE.FNT and NORMAL.FNT, I would
recommend starting by editing copies of these fonts and maintaining the
characters from ' ' through '~' as is. You might also want to create screen
versions of these fonts for High Rez (8x16) and Medium Rez (8x8) screen modes
and use a program such as Codehead's Warp 9 Control Panel to replace the
screen font to match the FAX font so that the special characters also appear
on screen.
> *If available, would it then be possible for a future STraight FAX! to allow
a > FONT option when converting text files?
This is not something we are considering at this time. However, the option to
use a different font exists already as described above.
To: D.HARRIS8,

Data and FAX mode are different and distinct modes of operation.
Please download the SYSINFO.ZIP program in the ST RT File Library and report
the resutls back to me in private GEMail. The SysInfo report will help me
determine what program you have installed (or de-installed) that is causing
the problem. Also inlcude in your GEMail the settings in the Modem, Dialing
and Receive FAX Preferences and what version of STraight FAX! you are using.
Depending on what model computer you have and what TOS version, a patch
program should be installed, such as Serial Fix 2.0, which is in the ST RT
File Library.
Also, please read the tech notes I posted here in Cat 4, Topic 24 a few weeks
ago.
To: M.RIVMAN1,
> Anyway, once I re-installed the program and re-selected Auto-Baud, all was >
fine. Some modems need the Auto-Baud setting to be selected or STraight Fax!
> will not initialize them.
The problem with the Zoom AFX and other similar FAX Modems based on the same
Rockwell chipset is that there is a bug in the firmware of these modems.
unfortunately, the firmware is not upgradable, without replacing the entire
FAX Modem data pump and controller, as it is all contained in one chip.
On all FAX Modems _except_ these Class 1 9600 Send/4800 Receive Rockwell based
FAX Modems, if the baus rate is set to 2400 baud and the command AT+FCLASS=1
or AT+FCLASS=2 is issued to set Class 1 or Class 2 FAX Mode as appropriate,
the modem issues the "OK" response at the current baud rate (2400 baud) and
then switches to 19200 baud.
However, with these FAX Modems, the modem switches to 19200 and then sends the
"OK" response.
STraight FAX! is looking for the "OK" response at 2400 baud, as it should and
when it is sent at 19200 baud, it comes back as garbage to the computer.
The "trick" around this problem is to enable the Auto Baud parameter. This
will cause STraight FAX! to begin communications at 19200 baud. Auto Baud is
not possible on all FAX Modems, but most newer FAX Modems support it (all FAX
Modems that have a V.42bis, V.32 or V.32bis or higher data protocol should
support Auto Baud rate detection).
With Auto Baud enabled the baud rate before the AT+FCLASS=1 command is 19200,
which is what it expects when the "OK" response is sent by these FAX modems.
It is a true bug in these FAX Modems. It could be worked around in STraight
FAX!, but at the expense of causing problems with FAX Modems that do not have
this bug. Since these are very low end FAX Modems and since setting the Auto
Baud parameter "fixed" the problem, this is all that needs to be done to
support these FAX Modems.
To: T.DUNBAR2,
Yes, assuming you have the updated firmware from Supra. This is called Silent
Answer mode and is fully supported by STraight FAX! since version 1.07. Please
read the message I posted a few weeks ago on the Supra firmware revision
history and use our SysInfo program to determine the firmare version in your
Supra FAX Modem.
To: B.ANDERSON31,
A FAX file is just a graphics file. There is no visibility in STraight FAX! as
to the originator of the FAX file and all FAX files are created and treated
equally ;-)
Is it possible that some FAX files are larger and have more detail than others
you are using?
> while I am in monochrome mode (I have a mult-synch monitor), I get two bombs

My problem appears to be, essentially, a memory problem. I just ran
another test using a Pagestream-created FAX document, but this time I made it

don't understand is why printing in the monochrome mode would impose greater
demands on memory than when I am operating in color mode. I am running
exactly the same accessories and set-up in both modes, and in both modes I can
view the full-page FAX documents without any problem. It is only when I go to

To: B.ANDERSON31,
What Desk acc's and AUTO folder programs are you running (BTW, SysInfo lists
this information)? Are you using a screen accelerator? Normally the ST Low
(320x200x16 colors), ST Medium (640x200x4 colors) and ST High (640x400x2
colors) use the same amount of memory for the screen, i.e. 32000 bytes.
If you have 2 megabytes, then this is not alot of memory by today's standards
of computing. 4 Megabytes is considered a low amount of RAM by most clone
makers. There are ways to take a Mega ST2 all the way up to 12 megabytes, so
there is room for growth in your machine. GDOS drivers are picky when it comes
to memory allocation. It is possible that memory is also becoming fragmented,
so that less usable memory (in one contiguous block) is available than
required.

1.0. It tells me the modem is not responding but does all the other tests.
The earlier version worked though. Only change here was the Rom upgrade to
Supra 1.80.

Thanks for the font info. In fact, it reminded me that I did indeed own
FONTZ!, but had never really used it much. I didn't even know where it was on
my hard drive, but a quick MAXIFILE search found it.
Now, back to checking out all my mono-spaced fonts, and doing some editing.
Thanks again!

a memory check with UISIII from within the STFax program, my color

thing in the mono configuration gives me only 841500. In any case, I am
convinced that the problem I encountered is simply a matter of not having

Charles, is there any chance that a future version of Straight Fax will allow
the user to name Speedo Gdos fax files as they are generated? This would be
enormously useful to me in generating fax invoices from Superbase
Professional. Thanks for all your help before. I decided the Zoom AFX Class 1
modem was the root of all evil, so I trashed it and got a high speed zoom fax
modem. So far, only about.01 per cent problems in establishing communications
compared with 20 per cent on the zoom AFX.

To: T.WILKINSON1,
Speedo GDOS is implemented at a lower level in the Atari TOS Operating
System than the user interface level, i.e the AES which provides the File
Selector. Therefore a GDOS driver can not call the AES to display a File
Selector to choose the destination FAX filename.
One solution would be for an application to present the File Selector and
use a special method to pass the path/name of the FAX file to GDOS which in
turn passes it onto the GDOS driver when it is opened. This method is the same
as used by the META.SYS driver for generating GEM Metafiles.
The current method of selecting the name of a FAX file works not only for
the Speedo GDOS driver, but with all the supplied printer drivers. The FAX
Manager CPX/TSR combination allows the user to select the output path/filename
just prior to printing from the application. Just keep the FAX Manager CPX
window open and off to the side and you can access it to set the Output Path
at any time.
The Zoom AFX is a low end Class 1 only FAX Modem that is good for entry
level users. Its firmware is built into the FAX Modem data pump chip, so its
not easily upgradable, like other FAX Modems with separate firmware EPROMS.

STraight Fax doesn't like this for some reason. When this is in the Dialing

I'd be able to solve this a bit better if my speaker wasn't blown on the Supra

I've tried listening in on another extension during dialing but haven't been

Gordon:
With regards to your attempts to disable Caller ID, have you tried:
1) Using the Dialing Prefix ATDT *67W ? STraight Fax MAY need to
see the ATDT command in order to execute the Prefix properly (I've not tested
this, and the manual doesn't mention it for v1.07, so it's just a guess)
2) Instead of using the W command (Wait), insert commas. Each comma's
wait time is defined in the dialing preferences section. Using a 2-second
pause time, insert one or two commas into the string, i.e.: ATDT *67,,
I think the reason STalker, Aladdin, et al work WITHOUT the ATDT being
there is that they define their init codes separately.
Hope this helps.

The other solution MAY be to leave a space after the *67, and

I'm having a bit of a problem with the Silent Answer feature. I used STraight
Fax 2.10 to turn it on in my Supra v.32bis (firmware version 1.8) and it
seemed to work OK, but after exit from the program the modem was unable to
respond to any commands on the data side; ATZ did no good. In order to get
things working again I had to run STraight Fax, disable Silent Answer by
clicking on the box, and re-initialize the modem (by holding Alt when exiting
that dialog). Now things are back to normal.
Anybody else run into this? Is it necessary to always turn off Silent Answer
before exiting STFax? Or is this something I should take up with Supra?
By the way I just subscribed to Call Answer with Bell Canada, if that makes
any difference.

The modem tester part of SysInfo was written by Dave Troy of Toad Computers.
While it uses the same basic commands as STraight FAX!, a problem with SysInfo
does not mean that STraight FAX! will not work. The mots likely cause for a
problem with SysInfo is something unusual in the system setup.
Since SysInfo tries to find out everything it can about the computer and FAX
Modem, it attempt to use little used capabilities of the computer. In some
cases, this _may_ cause a crash.
Please send the SYSINFO.TXT file to me (via private GEMail), i.e. the partial
results in this file will help us isolate the problem.

Try installing Serial Fix 2.0, a 2400 baud modem only communicates at 2400
baud. A 14400 baud modem communicates at 19200 baud (or higher). Then send me
the results in the SYSINFO.TXT file (via private GEMail).

The 'AT' should not be entered into the Init String in the Modem Preferences.
It is sent automatically, which is why the 'AT' is a static text field in the
dialog.

Most newer/auto-dial FAX Machines and all FAX Modems send the CNG tone to
signal the called party/FAX Machine/FAX Modem/FAX Switch Box that it is a FAX
Device calling.

STraight FAX! appends the Dialing Prefix to the start of a FAX Number that is
dialed and sends it to the modem in the ATD... command. STraight FAX! does not
know what the Dialing Prefix is, it just passes it through.
ASCII Characters in the dialing prefix, such as T, P, W & S are all converted
to uppercase by STraight FAX!. What type of FAX Modem are you using? Please
check the modem manual and verify that it actually supports the "W" character
in a dialing sequence.
To: GRMEYER,

FAX, Image & PCX graphic files are compressed bitmapped graphics. These files
must be read into memory from disk, parsed, and uncompressed into a buffer in
RAM. This takes time. Once this is done, the window is opened with the graphic
displayed. To reduce the size by 50% requires more processing time and memory.
Most Atari users are still using 8 Mhz 68000 CPU's with 4 or less megabytes of
RAM.
The way the program works now, the user opens tha graphic file and then they
can hit the "-" key to reduce the size of the graphic. The amount of time in
processing and RAM is the same as if it were done automatically, however not
all users have the memory to display a graphic at its full and 50% size.
To: G.FUHRMAN,
> respond to any commands on the data side; ATZ did no good. In order to get
What baud rate were you trying to communicate with the FAX Modem at after
exiting STraight FAX!? If you have TOS 1.04 or higher, STraight FAX! will
restore the baud rate to the value it was prior to running STraight FAX! (the
capability to detect the current baud rate was added as of TOS 1.04).
Silent Answer is enabled by issuing a command to the FAX Modem, while in Class
1 or Class 2 FAX Mode.
Was your Supra V.32bis FAX Modem recently purchased?

Serial Fix 2.0 corrects the RTS/CTS flow control bug. I dont use MIDI apps
such as SMPTE-Track, so I dont know much about it. If this program assumed
that the RTS/CTS bug is present, then a patch such as Serial Fix 2.0 that
corrects it, may cause problems with it. Also, make sure that the Serial Fix
2.0 CPX does not have RTS/CTS mode locked.
BTW, you should also notify Medical Designs Software, the developers of Serial
Fix 2.0.

We need to get the v1.80 firmware from Supra. Our contact at Supra recently
left the company, so I will need to find another person in their tech support

My question about Silent Answer was moot, I guess, since the Call Answer
service I now subscribe to apparently doesn't let anything through to the
modem after it picks up the line, so Silent Answer wouldn't work on this setup
anyway. But to answer your questions, I'm using TOS 3.06 and my Supra v.32bis
was purchased about 2 years ago. The firmware upgrade is 1.80-03. I'm quite
sure the baud rate I was attempting to use after using Silent Answer was 9600
because it was Aladdin I was using, and it's configured for 9600 (computer-to-

For those of us not multitasking, but want to use STraight Fax 2.10 as a desk
accessory, there is a program that will allow the STFAX.ACC to look in your
directory of choice for the files it needs to operate.
It is here in the library, look for ENVIRNMT.LZH.
The program that goes in the auto folder is great, but don't try using its
configuration program (or accessory) if you have Universal Item Selector
installed.
All you really need is the AUTOENVR.PRG in your AUTO folder in the root
directory and a text file that says:
STFAX=DRIVE\FOLDER NAME\FOLDER NAME\
replace the drives and folder names with the your own and name this file
DESKTOP.ENV and put it in the root directory of your hard drive.
Good Luck!

other than the FAX software bundled with them?
3. I have a 2.5 meg 1040 with tos 1.04, is that enough memory to work with

A PC compatible FAX Modem may be an internal FAX Modem, which would not be
useable with an Atari computer. If its an external RS-232 interfaced FAX
Modem, it can be connected.
There are several "standards" for FAX Modems that define the AT command set
extension between the computer and FAX Modem. These are known as "Classes".
Class 1 is an official EIA specification. It is a very low level command set
that requires all the timing to be done by the host computer software. Class 2
is an unofficial standard based on the first draft of the Class 2 proposal
sent to the EIA. This version of Class 2 was not approved by the EIA's TR29.2
FAX Standards committee due to political reasons from several large FAX Modem
vendors who had voting power on the committee. Despite being voted down,
several vendors went ahead and designed Class 2 products. Last year, Class 2
was finally approved by the EIA, but in a much different form than the Class 2
in use. To avoid confusion, the official Class 2 is known as Class 2.0. The
only FAX Modem that we are aware of that supports Class 2.0 at this time is
the US Robotics Courier.
STraight FAX! supports Class 1 and Class 2, plus an older command set used by
SendFAX Modems designed by Sierra Semiconductor. Class 2.0 support is
currently under consideration (anyone want to loan us a Courier for a few
weeks ;-).
A more detailed account of Class 1, 2 and 2.0 is available in past messages in
this topic, which have now been archived and uploaded to the ST RT File
Library.
> 3. I have a 2.5 meg 1040 with tos 1.04, is that enough memory to work with
2 or more meg of memory is recommended. If you run STraight FAX! as a desk
accessory or under a multitasking OS, then you might want to free up more
memory. Printing FAXes will also require a megabyte or more of RAM, depending
on the printer resolution (since it prints via GDOS).

Its a good idea to do an AT&V, capture register dump, and save this file to
disk. Then if things go wrong, do an AT&F and AT&W to restore the factory
settings and then manually reset each register. A script file can be created
in a terminal program to automate this.

> as device 61. The thing is, I already have the following line in my
ASSIGN.SYS > 61r memory.sys > > What else can I do? I'm using G+Plus v1.5.
MEMORY.SYS is a special driver that allows imaging VDI commands to a memory
based raster bitmap. This is how a GEM Metafile is rendered with STraight
FAX!. However, MEMORY.SYS was only released as of Font GDOS. The general rule
is to use a GDOS driver with the version of GDOS it is menat for. There is no
MEMORY.SYS driver for the original GDOS, which G+Plus replaces.
You will need to use either Font GDOS or Speedo GDOS with the supplied version
of MEMORY.SYS. Both Font GDOS and Speedo GDOS come with utilities to
automatically configure the ASSIGN.SYS file. These utilities should work with
_any_ ASSIGN.SYS file, even if an older GDOS is in use.
You might also want to try removing the "r" after the device number "61". The
"r" makes the driver RAM memory resident. This may not be compatible with
G+Plus as it changes the way that the original GDOS works by allowing
different .SYS files to be loaded. The "r" makes the driver load once into RAM
at boot up. The Speedo and Font GDOS utilities have an option to make a driver
RAM resident or not.
MEMORY.SYS will work as a memory resident driver under Font and Speedo GDOS.
It will occupy about 60K of RAM at all times when it is resident. This will
improve the performance a bit when viewing/converting GEM files.

QVFIX1.PRG is a mis-named file, which should be named OVFIX1.PRG. This utility
was originally supplied to developers for testing with MultiTOS. It cures the
"phantom keyclick" bug. It has no effect on RS-232 communications and any
reports of doing so are purely coincidental. OVFIX1.PRG was released with
Tocuh Up by Migraph and later it was renamed and uploaded to the ST RT File

Use the STFAX18.PRT or STFAX21.PRT with Pagestream 1.8x or 2.x. Page 128 of
the manual covers the installation of these drivers into the proper folders in
Pagestream and the selection of these drivers in Pagestream.
Page 133 covers the FAX Manager CPX, which will allow you to name the
generated FAX files prior to printing them to disk in Pagestream.
The FAX drivers will generate proper resolution (Normal or Fine) FAX files,
based on the setting in the Print Density in Pagestream. You can view these
files prior to sending them to verify that they are correct. These FAX files
are ready to send without any further conversion, so if they view properly,
they should send properly.
To: POTECHIN (Nathan @ DMC),
Have you tried using the FAX Modem to call a BBS or on-line system in Europe?
If it has not been verified doing this in data mode, then there may be an AT
command that has to be configured to allow the modem to connect properly
overseas. There are different delays in calling overseas. Increasing the
Dialing Prefs: "Wait till Connect" to 60 sec or more should allow enough time
to connect. Also look in the modem manual for special commands to configure
the modem for use overseas (i.e. Guard Tone). It also may be necessary to
pulse dial, as some countries do not support Touch Tone (Italy ?). Also try
setting the Dialing Prefs: "Ignore Dial Tone" as sometimes a fast ring cadence
is interpreted as a busy signal by the FAX Modem.
As a last resort, setup for a Manual Send, dial the international phone number
manually from the handset and then activate the Manual Send when you hear the
FAX tone.

I see that Direct Micro is selling a GVC 14,400 FAX/Data modem for $159.

STraight FAX 2.1 on my TT with the Supra Fax Modeam V.32bis (the package deal
from Toad Computers) has shown other problems with PageStream:
EPS graphics on a page (Illustrator format) or Calamus CVG graphics, if used,
only partially appear on a fax printed witht the new STraight FAX PageStream
2.2 driver. Large black areas may appear, but virtually all details are lost,
leaving a white space on the page.
This is very embarrassing for business faxes. "What logo?" is what I hear on
the voice call back. The missing images are seen both on the sent fax as well
as on the TT in view fax mode.
Annoyingly, any all-PageStream graphic, created with the built in drawing
tools, will appear fine, but to recreate complex, perhaps originally
autotraced images is impossible with primitive tools.
Revision definitely needed ASAP! Corrected driver uploaded here???

Richard,
The limitations you've found printing faxes from PageStream may be due to
PageStream itself rather than the fax printer driver. I've seen similar
results with Softlogik's IMG.PRT driver: complex vector graphics that will
print all right to Postscript will not print properly when the whole page has
to be turned into a bitmap (such as a fax file). There are limits to the
length of a path, and to the number of objects as well, I think.
You might be able to get around this by converting the graphics _one at a
time_ to IMG using IMG.PRT (and a small page size), and then setting up your
fax page template so it only includes bitmap graphics. Or if that doesn't
work, you might be reduced to scanning a printout of the graphics and saving
them in IMG format to be imported into the PgS doc.

gnox - I was having trouble the other day trying to save Pagestream files to
IMG and then faxing. You mentioned saving to a small page size. Maybe this was
my problem? I've since been using the STFAX21 driver in Pagestream, so maybe
the problem is moot, but I was curious anyway as to why the IMG method wasn't
working. I noticed that the print density was the same no matter which (1

Its the FAX Class that is set in STraight FAX!, not the Group. All FAX
Modems currently are CCITT Group 3 FAX compatible.
To: POTECHIN (Nathan @ DMC),
> when I call a certain BBS in Germany I have to type the ATX0 command first

The ATXn command is issued by STraight FAX!. The exact value of "n" depends
on the settings of the Blind Dialing and Ignore Busy Signal parameters.
For most FAX Modems the ATXn command is defined as:
X1 Blind Dial, Do not Detect Busy Signal
X2 Wait for Dial Tone, Do not Detect Busy Signal
X3 Blind Dial, Detect Busy Signal
X4 Wait for Dial Tone, Detect Busy Signal
Depending on the country that the firmware was configured for,
It is possible that the detection of the busy signal and/or dial tone may
be either always enabled or always disabled regardless of the state of the
Xn register.
For FAXing X0 is the same as X1. So to get the effect of X0 or X1, enable
Blind Dialing and Ignore Busy Signal.

Welcome back from the Winter Olympics.
> I see that Direct Micro is selling a GVC 14,400 FAX/Data modem for $159.
We have tested GVC FAX Modems in the past and they have worked in Class 2
mode, however the GVC FAX Modems required the use of RTS/CTS flow control.
This required that Serial Fix 2.0 be installed in the AUTO folder to
correct the RTS/CTS bug in all TOS versions (1.00 through 3.06) on the
MFP based serial port.
You might also want to look into Supra's FAX Modems, as they also support
Caller ID and Silent Answer. Slient Answer allows sharing of the FAX Modem
with a Voice Line/Answering machine.

As G.FUHRMAN has already indicated, the "problem" has nothing to do with the
STraight FAX! Pagestream printer driver (or computer or FAX Modem).
The STraight FAX! printer drivers for Pagestream (and all other applications)
are very simple filters that take the page bitmap that the application
generated line by line and converts it into FAX format, then writes it to
a FAX file. The driver acts just as any other bitmapped printer driver would,
i.e. 9 pin, 24 pin, HP DeskJet or LaserJet.
The size of the STFAX21.PRT driver is 2590 bytes. The driver is actually a
very small program that communicates with Pagestream. There is not alot that
a 2590 byte program can do, when it comes to rendering a page of from a
Desktop Publishing program.
The problem of printing Encapsulated Postscript files is contained in
Pagestream. The STraight FAX! printer driver has no visibility as to what
is contained on the page. It simply tells Pagestream what resolutions are
valid for the FAX device, i.e.
Print Density of 1 = Normal FAX Rez = 203 x 98 DPI
Print Density of 2-7 = Fine FAX Rez = 203 x 196 DPI
Then when you print the page, Pagestream renders the page from the text,
fonts
and graphics located on it at the selected FAX resolution. Pagestream calls
the driver with a pointer to a slice of the page bitmap and tells it to
output it to its "device". In this case, this is a FAX file. For a regular
printer driver, this would be the Parallel or Serial port.
BTW, the routine that converts a line of bitmapped graphics to FAX format is
actually linked into each of the different STraight FAX! printer drivers. It
is virtually impossible that this routine could be the cause of problems, as
it has been called literally millions of times by STraight FAX! users and
has not ever been the source of a problem. This routine is about 2/3 of
the 2590 byte Pagestream driver. The rest of the driver is composed of
simple interface routines to Pagestream.
> This is very embarrassing for business faxes. "What logo?" is what I hear
on
> the voice call back. The missing images are seen both on the sent fax as
well
> as on the TT in view fax mode.
Viewing the FAX files prior or after sending confirms that the STraight FAX!
program is not part of the problem. Viewing the FAX files is probably a
good idea so that you know that the page was constructed properly.
> Revision definitely needed ASAP! Corrected driver uploaded here???
There is no need for a revised or corrected STraight FAX! driver. The
problem is in Pagestream. The solution is to convert your vector graphics
(i.e. EPS and CVG files) to bitmaps _OR_ print use the PostScript driver
and print to a Postscript file. Then use CompoScript to print the PostScript
files to Image files at 203x196 DPI (Fine) or 203x98 DPI (Normal).
BTW, What type of printer do you normally print with in Pagestream? If its
a Postscript printer, you will probably never see this occur, since it is
not a bitmapped printer device.
To: T.DUNBAR2,
The IMG printer driver has several resolutions. Some are two small for
FAXing,
some are too large. The closest resolution to a FAX resolution is 200x200
DPI,
which is close to Fine Rez FAX at 203x196 DPI.
Use the STraight FAX! (STFAX21.PRT) driver instead to generate FAX files.
> working. I noticed that the print density was the same no matter which (1
> through 7) number I clicked on in the print option in Pagestream.
This is not correct.
Print Density 1 = 203 x 98 DPI -> Normal FAX Rez
Print Density 2 through 7 = 203 x 98 DPI -> Fine FAX Rez.

Tommy,
PageStream's IMG.PRT driver, like the STFAX21 driver, has two resolutions - or
maybe more? - and one of them is 2540x2540, which might cause problems! The
advantage of adjusting the page size downward (which has to be done prior to
printing) is that it makes the resulting file smaller, and might increase the
chance that any vector graphics will be successfully converted to bitmaps.
But you probably wouldn't want to print fax pages to disk that way.

I know exactly what you mean. That's what happens when I try to connect to
that Sharp Phone/Fax machine.
Because I always have the AUTO-BAUD button set ON, I can watch The STraight
Fax! drop the baud rates as it automatically tries lower baud rates.
If you are still set for manually selecting the baud rate (send), you might
try hitting the same machines at 4600 baud. One Murata machine a friend has
seems to connect at that rate. I don't know what causes that, but
occaisionaly, I'll get through at the lower rate, when 9600 won't do.
One other thing to check... (can't remember if you mentioned this already...)
the baud rate your computer is talking to the modem at. While the STraight
Fax! program should be setting the baud rate to 19200 baud, I used to find
that sometimes when I checked in the Modem Setup CPX, it was still set to
2400!
Good luck,

Supra FAX Modems (i.e. Rockwell based with Rockwell firmware) support both
RTS/CTS flow control and XON/XOFF flow control. Since TOS 1.00 through 3.06
require Serial Fix 2.0 for proper operation of RTS/CTS, it is required if you
select RTS/CTS flow control. However, Serial Fix 2.0 corrects other problems
and is recommended no matter which flow control mode and TOS version (3.06 or
lower) in use.
I have seen a number of posts in other places where users are incorrectly
stating that Serial Fix 2.0 is not needed on TOS 2.06 and 3.06.
TOS 2.06 and 3.06 have the same bug that is in all previous TOS versions when
it comes to RTS/CTS flow control on the MFP based serial port. This is
basically that the XBIOS serial port handler will not always process the CTS
interrupt (i.e. when the CTS input signal on the RS-232 port changes state) in
a timely manner. The reason for this is that the priority of the CTS interrupt
was assigned below that of the MFP data byte input and output interrupts.
Serial Fix 2.0 corrects this by manually checking the state of the CTS signal
prior to sending a byte of data to the RS-232 port.
Since the priority of the CTS interrupt (level 2) was assigned to low, the bug
is one that is dependent on the CPU speed, baud rate and percent of activity
of data being sent out on the RS-232 port. It may not appear very often on a
TT030 at 33 MHz, but it will if MultiTOS is in use.
Where people have been confused is that some of the earlier TOS versions have
additional bugs in the serial port handlers. While TOS 2.06 and 3.06 do not
contain these bugs, they do contain this one underlying bug.

There are a few PD programs that will magnify the area around the mouse and
display it in a window. I think there is one in the ST RT file library.
Also, STraight FAX! supports the Atari Clipboard. You can copy/paste an area
to the Clipboard and then load it into an Image editing program, such as Tocuh
Up, MVG, etc. If the Image Editor does not support the Atari Clipboard, you
can still load/save the SCRAP.IMG file in the Clipboard folder into it. Image
Editor's such as Touch Up have a magnify mode. When you are done with the
changes, save the Image back to the SCRAP.IMG file or copy it to the Clipboard
if it supports the Atari Clipboard. Then paste it back into the clip area in
the STraight FAX! window.
Switching back and forth between STraight FAX! and another application is alot
easier when it is loaded as desk accessory, or when a multitasking AES is used
(MultiTOS or Geneva).
BTW, V2.20 of STraight FAX! will support the non-standard Clipboard method
used by Touch Up, which will simplify the process above.
To: W.PIKE,
I would like to discuss this further in EMail. Look for my message. Thanks.

Sometimes this will solve a connection problem, as most FAX machines are
limited to 9600 baud.
To: C.NICHOLLS,
STraight FAX! resets the FAX Modem after it terminates. Please try disabling
Auto Receive prior to terminating STraight FAX! and see if this makes any
difference. BTW, the way STraight FAX! resets the FAX Modem is by sending the
ATZ command.
If Auto Receive is enabled, and STraight FAX! is still running (i.e. but not
the active application), you will not be able to use the FAX Modem with
another application until you disable Auto Receive or terminate STraight FAX!.
BTW, what TOS version are you using? STraight FAX! will restore the serial
port settings after its done with sending or when Auto Receive is disabled.
Unfortunately, prior to TOS 1.04, the baud rate can not be restored.
To: M.RIVMAN1,
> Because I always have the AUTO-BAUD button set ON, I can watch The STraight
> Fax! drop the baud rates as it automatically tries lower baud rates.
The Auto Baud parameter is not related to the Training baud rate step down.
Auto Baud was added to speed up the FAX Modem initialization (i.e. prior to
dialing). Alot of older FAX Modems are plain 2400 baud data modems. The only
way to establish communication with these modems is at 2400 baud (or lower).
Once the command is sent to switch to FAX Mode (i.e. Class 1 or Class 2), the
modem communicates at 19200 baud. This baud rate remains fixed throughout the
FAX connection, until the modem is reset. The 19200 baud rate is an
asynchronous baud rate between the computer's RS-232 port and the FAX Modem's
RS-232 port. Since its asynchronous, there is one start bit and one stop bit
for each byte (8 bits) of data. So the maximum throughput at 19200 baud async
is 1920 bytes/sec, since there is 10 bits of data for each byte of
information.
The FAX Baud rates range from 2400 baud to 14400 baud, in steps of 2400 baud.
These baud rates are synchronous. There are no start and stop bits and once
the data starts flowing, it goes on continuously, until there is no more data
to send. So at 14400 baud sync, there is a sustained throughput of 1800
bytes/sec (14400/8).
If the FAX connection is at 14400 baud sync, then during a FAX send operation,
the computer to FAX Modem throughput must be greater than or equal to the FAX
to FAX sustained throughput of 1800 bytes/sec. This is the case, since the
computer to FAX Modem throughput is 1920 bytes/sec. To prevent the computer
from overrunning the buffer in the FAX Modem (which can range from 100 to
16384 bytes depending on the FAX Modem), Flow Control is used. On the
otherhand, if the computer can not keep up with sending the data to the
computer, it will underrun the FAX Modem buffer and the FAX connection may
terminate. The only way this might happen is under MultiTOS (which slows down
the CPU) on an 8 MHz computer, sending at a 14400 baud FAX rate.
Serial Fix 2.0 actually improves this situation by installing more efficient
RS-232 handlers in the XBIOS.
During a FAX receive at 14400 baud, the computer will receive 1800 bytes of
data/sec over the 19200 baud async RS-232 port, which is under its 1920
bytes/sec capability. During the FAX receive, there is no flow control in
effect, as the computer is assumed to have enough storage to handle the
incoming data.
> try hitting the same machines at 4600 baud. One Murata machine a friend has
> seems to connect at that rate. I don't know what causes that, but >
occaisionaly, I'll get through at the lower rate, when 9600 won't do.
I think you menat 4800 baud. BTW, the Zoom AFX can only receive at 4800 baud.
So there can be cases when you send a FAX to a location that can only handle
up to 4800 baud.
> One other thing to check... (can't remember if you mentioned this
already...) > the baud rate your computer is talking to the modem at. While
the STraight > Fax! program should be setting the baud rate to 19200 baud, I
used to find > that sometimes when I checked in the Modem Setup CPX, it was
still set to > 2400!
The settings in the Modem Setup CPX have no bearing on STraight FAX!. STFAX!
will do its best (TOS version dependent, see above message) to restore the
specified serial port back to its state when its done.
BTW, while Auto Receive is enabled, the baud rate in the Modem Setup will
always be forced to 19200 baud. Dont change the settings on the serial port
used by STraight FAX! while Auto Receive is enabled.

I've never been able to upgrade to 2.10 because I can't copy the disk. The
instructions say to use a disk copying utility, but neither ProCopy 1.70 or

work? I just get a countdown from 44 or something down to 0, and then a "can't

one. Of course, 2.00 has worked fine for what I've been doing.

I am using the little brother to your Zoom 14.4... the Zoom AFX modem, and
have that same problem, albeit with only one receiving machine so far. The
machine in question is a Sharp Fax machine, model is unknown to me, but I can
watch the baud readout drop as Straight Fax! attempts to connect.
Others here, and Charles @ New Star have indicated otherwise, but in some
instances I have found the patch OFIX1.PRG (QFIX1.PRG in the GEnie libraries,
I think) to cure the problem. It hasn't helped with the Sharp machine, but
there were a few other machines I had trouble with, one of them a Murata, that
adding QFIX.PRG to the AUTO boot sequence allowed me to send with no timeouts.
I'm not sure what it does, but it did help in many instances. You should be
able to find it if you search the lib's under OFIX1.PRG, or QFIX1.PRG. I
think it is a patch for the MultiTos OS, but again, it worked for me, with
Geneva. (no MultiTOS)

When you copied your master disk, did you format the disk to 80 sectors/10
tracks? This is (I believe) what the master disk is, and what it needs to be
for the Install.PRG to work properly.
If you use a program like FastCopyIII, I know this will work if you set it to
copy the format of the source disk exactly. In fact, if your copy prg. will
allow you to copy the format as well as the files from the source, you do not
even have to pre-format the destination disk.
I had the same messages until I noticed the bit in the docs informing me of

What firmware revision is in your Zoom FAX Modem? Rockwell has released
newer firmware via several vendors that use Rockwell chipsets that improve
the page ack response.
To: M.RIVMAN1,
OVFIX1.PRG (or QVFIX1.PRG as it has been renamed) is not a patch for
MultiTOS,
but is a patch for the BIOS/TOS. This patch does nothing to affect serial
port
operation, but if anyone feels that it improves the operation of sending or
receiving FAXes, then they can use it. However, we make no warranty as to
the operation of STraight FAX! with OVFIX1.PRG or any other third party
patch unless otherwise noted in the manual or README.TXT file.

As of Dec 20, 1992 FCC Part 68 requires all FAXes transmitted to have some
form of identification of the sender. Please refer to the FCC Compliance
paragraph on page 9 of the manual (rev 2.00b or higher). State and local
laws may also apply when blocking the Caller ID of a transmitted FAX
document. Blocking the Caller ID may violate these laws. Please check the
laws in your state and local area.
> It doesnt really explain how to do that in the manual or did I just miss
it?
Enter the "*67," or "*67W" in the Dialing Prefix if you want it to be
universal
for all FAX numbers dialed. This is covered in The Dialing Preferences
chapter.
The "," causes a pause, specified by the Comma Pause Time in the Dialing
Prefereneces. The "W" causes a wait for a second dial tone. These are
discussed
in the FAX Phone List chapter and should also be discussed in your FAX
Modem's
manual.
If you only want to do this for particular FAX numbers, then put this in the
actual FAX phone number or define a dialing macro with this sequence and
place the dialing macro at the start of FAX number.

To: All Registered STraight FAX! 2.xx owners,
========================================
NewSTar Technology Management will soon be releasing STraight FAX! version
2.20. While the official release date has not been set for release of version
2.20, we would like to offer registered owners of STraight FAX! version 2.00
or higher the opportunity to use this new version prior to its official
release.
The pre-version 2.20 of STraight FAX! has been under beta testing by our
crack expert team of beta testers for the past few months. Their testing
and suggestions for features in STraight FAX! has been extremely helpful.
However, due to the rapidly changing FAX Modem marketplace, where new FAX
Modem models and firmware are released almost weekly, there are probably
a number of FAX Modems that have not yet been tested with the new beta
version.
Any STraight FAX! version 2.00 or higher owner can now request the pre-
version
2.20 beta via GEMail here on GEnie or via the Toad BBS as F-Mail. To qualify,
you must be a registered owner of STraight FAX! version 2.00 or higher, which
means that we must have your registration card on file. To request the
pre-version 2.20 beta, please send PRIVATE GEmail to "C.S.SMETON" here on
GEnie
or to user "Charles" on the Toad BBS (410-544-6999, 300-14400 baud). It is
very important to include your 10 digit Registration Number in the request.
Please do not post requests for this beta version in public.
We will be begin Emailing the pre-version 2.20 beta in about a week, so there
is ample time to send in a request and mail in the registration card if
necessary.
Version 2.20 has a number of additional features and enhancements in both
the user interface, commands, features and FAX Modem operation. A number of
changes in the FAX Modem operation have been made for the US Robotics
Sportster and Courier FAX Modems. If you have one of these FAX Modems, you
will probably want to get this pre release version of 2.20.
When version 2.20 is officially released, it will become the "shipping
version" of STraight FAX! at no change in the list price. Once version 2.20
is released, it will be made available to registered STraight FAX! 2.xx
owners
free of charge (outside of on-line connection costs) via GEnie as an attached
file in GEMail or F-Mail on the Toad BBS. In addition, updates will be
provided at a small handling cost via postal mail.
Thank You,

STraight FAX! allows the user to place a header at the top of each page that
is transferred. This header can contain an ASCII string, which identifies the
sender. This string can be a name, phone number or both.
STraight FAX! also allows entering a 20 character Local FAX ID string that is
sent to the remote FAX machine. Again, this string can be a name or phone
number.
In addition, the Cover Page includes fields for Name, Voice Phone, FAX Phone,
etc.
It is up to the user to comply with the local, state and federal laws by
entering valid information into these fields.
To: G.ZEPKA1,
> Well how about letting someone call up your STraight Fax program and use a >

This capability requires a special voice mail capable FAX Modem. Most FAX
Modems do not have the ability to detect DTMF Touch Tone codes and send a code
back to the host computer. What you have proposed is a Voice Mail/ FAX on
Demand system. The effort required to design such a system is quite extensive
and time consuming. The question remains if such a system would be supported
in the Atari community. With a limited marketplace, the cost of such a system
may be beyond what most users are willing to spend for this capability.
